Spirited Candy Corn Cake

2017-09-14 By Heather

Spirited Candy Corn Halloween Cake

A Halloween cake styled after candy corn and using Limoncello and Orangecello to liven it up!

Note: This was my first attempt at this cake. I highly recommend turning this into two cakes by cutting each cake layer in half to decrease the height of the cake. Originally published in 2015.

Ingredients

  • 3 boxes White Cake Mix
  • 3 containers White Frosting or 2 large ones
  • 18 egg whites
  • 1 ½ cups oil
  • ¾ cup Limoncello
  • ¾ cup Orangecello
  • 2 ¼ cup water
  • Lemon Flavoring
  • Orange Flavoring
  • Yellow Food Color
  • Red Food Color
  • Candy Corn Candy
  • Candy Corn Marshmallows

Instructions

Orangecello Cake

  • Place cake mix in mixing bowl.
  • Add eggs, oil, and water to cake mix.
  • Add Orangecello.
  • Mix thoroughly.
  • Add red and yellow food coloring. (Note: I used about 15 drops each, but you can go more or less depending on how dark you want the color.)
  • Pour mixture into a sprayed cake pan.

Limoncello Cake

  • Repeat above steps for Limoncello layer.
  • Add Limoncello instead of Orangecello to cake mix.
  • Use only yellow food coloring.
  • Pour mixture into a sprayed cake pan.

White Cake

  • Repeat above steps for white layer.
  • Use all water for liquid. (Note: No liqueur in this layer.)
  • Pour mixture into a sprayed cake pan.
  • Bake all three cakes in a 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes. (Note: If you are using six cake pans vs three, follow the baking directions on the box.)
  • When cakes are done, remove from oven and completely cool.

Orange Frosting

  • Place frosting into small mixing bowl.
  • Add yellow and red food coloring.
  • Add Orange flavoring.
  • Stir until well blended.
  • Set aside.

Lemon Frosting

  • Place frosting into small mixing bowl.
  • Add yellow food coloring.
  • Add Lemon flavoring.
  • Stir until well blended.
  • Set aside.

White Frosting

  • Place frosting into small mixing bowl.
  • Stir until smooth.

Building the Cake

  • Place Limoncello cake onto a plate.
  • Top with lemon frosting.
  • Push frosting to edge to create a “drip” effect.
  • Place in fridge for 30 minutes, or until frosting sets.
  • Place Orangecello cake layer on top of Limoncello cake layer.
  • Top with orange frosting.
  • Push frosting to edge to create a “drip” effect.
  • Place in fridge for 30 minutes, or until frosting sets.
  • Place white cake layer on top of Orangecello cake layer.
  • Top with white frosting.
  • Stick long, wooden skewers into center of cake to keep it stable.
  • Top cake with candy corn pieces.
  • Edge cake with candy corn marshmallows.
  • Place entire cake in fridge to keep it chilled and for the frosting to completely set.
  • Once the frosting is set, Happy Halloween time!

Notes

  • Use six cake pans instead of three. (I found mine at the Dollar Store, 1 pkg w/ 3 pans. So it will be $2 for six pans.)
  • Cut off rounded top of each cake. Makes the layers flat and easier to set on top of each other.
  • Let each frosting layer chill in fridge for 30-40 minutes until set before putting the cake layer on top. You want it to “spill” over the side (like the top layer) but not run off. My frosting ran and the colors muddled.
