Prayer Day 68: Alone

2021-04-03 By Heather

[Let your] conduct [be] without covetousness; [be] content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.

[HEBREWS 13:5 NKJV]

Today I read a piece by Anne Graham Lotz. She wrote about how alone the disciples must have felt the day after Christ was crucified. It was a day of darkness for them because they felt that God was dead.

Although she states that God was dead, I don’t agree. You see, God is three in one: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Jesus, the Son of God, was crucified, but God was still on the throne. God was still in control of everything that was happening and everything that was to happen. Yes, the disciples felt despair.

She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept.

[Mar 16:10 NKJV]

The man, the Son of God, whom they had been following for so long was dead. The leader they trusted and hoped in was no longer there with them physically. They did not yet have the Holy Spirit to guide them and give them peace. So, until Christ rose, they thought they were alone.

How often do we feel alone? How often do we wonder where God is in all that is going on? Do we wonder if He has forgotten us?

God never leaves. God never forgets us. Although it may feel like He has departed, especially when evil is so prevalent, He hasn’t left us. He is always there waiting for us to seek Him. When people, and nations, shut Him out, eventually He will give them what they want. He gives them over to themselves.

And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;

[Rom 1:28 NKJV]

He will judge nations, and allow corruption in leadership to take hold, if there is no repentance. Even if there are believers who truly seek Him and His will, He looks at the heart of the people and the nation. Think of Noah and his family and the environment in which they lived.

Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man [was] great in the earth, and [that] every intent of the thoughts of his heart [was] only evil continually.

[Gen 6:5 NKJV]

Thankfully, God sent the Holy Spriit to be in His Church. The Holy Spirit never leaves us. Through the Holy Spirit we are never alone. Once the disciples had the Holy Spirit come upon them, they had the peace that God gives us. They were never alone again.

Because of what Christ did for all people, we who follow Him will never be alone and can know He is always watching over us. He will watch over us until He save us from His wrath, just like He did for Noah.

and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, [one of] eight [people], a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;

[2Pe 2:5 NKJV]

Then we will forever be in His holy presence!

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.

[Jhn 6:47 NKJV]

All we have to do is believe!

Joni Eareckson Tada
I’m alone, yet not alone.
God’s the light that will guide me home.
With His love and tenderness,
Leading through the wilderness,
And wherever I may roam,
I’m alone, yet not alone.
