Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds her nest and raises her young at a place near your altar, O LORD of Heaven’s Armies, my King and my God!
[Psa 84:3 NLT]
Last year our neighbor was host to a mother duck. She decided that his backyard was the perfect spot to nest. It was glorious to watch nature play out. This year it appears we have the honor of hosting a mother duck. My husband noticed her this afternoon, nestled under the palm trees on a raised area of our yard. We are both excited and praying that God protects her and her eggs.
Watching her sit on her nest and fluff her feathers is a joy. There is something incredible in watching God’s creation do what it was created to do. You watch the small movements and wonder what made the duck choose that spot. One can guess that the mother duck decided the spot looked safe and hidden. She does blend in very well to the surrounding colors.
The mother duck will everything she can to protect those eggs until they hatch. She sits and sits and sits all day long. As dusk rolls in she flies off to go get food. Before she leaves, the mother duck covers the eggs so as to hide them from predators. I’m sure she does much more than that in the process.
If a mother duck puts that much effort into protecting her eggs until they hatch, how much more does God provide and protect us?
“Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds?
[Luk 12:24 NKJV]
God gives us a safe place at His alter. We can go to Him with anything – praise, prayer, requests – and He will listen without judgement. He provides for our every need. He loves us so much that He even gave His Son to die for us so we could live. Like the mother duck nesting and protecting her eggs, God watches over us and protects us. He wants us to make it to the finish line, much like the mother duck wants her eggs to hatch.
If God loves all of His creatures, how much more does He love us – humans made in His image.
