“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives [it].” ‘
[Rev 2:17 NKJV]
Names are important. They identify every object on our planet and in the universe. Can you imagine if we walked around calling everything “this” or “that” or “you there?” It would create a lot of confusion. It’s confusing enough when you have more than one Jane, Joe, Susie, or Jack, in a room.
Most of us are given at most three names – first, middle, and last. We rarely think of meanings anymore but rather how the name sounds to us and how if affects us emotionally. Sometimes names are given to honor a loved one.
Have you ever wondered what our new names will be when we are finally with the Father? He will give each of us a new name for our lives in His kingdom.
“He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And [I will write on him] My new name.
[Rev 3:12 NKJV]
Names in the Bible have meanings and purpose. For example, God gave Abram the new name Abraham because he was to be the father of nations. [Gen 17:5] Even Christ had a special name, Emmanuel.
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
[Mat 1:23 KJV]
God has many names. Some refer to God alone and others refer to the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, or Christ.
For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
[Isa 9:6 NKJV]
God is known as the Alpha and the Omega; the Beginning and the End. He is the mighty One. He is, He was, and He always will be.
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
[Rev 1:8 KJV]
I am excited at the idea of a new name. It will be specific to me and have a meaning that is glorious, and it will be directly from God. I can’t even begin to imagine what my name will be, but I know it will be amazing and beyond my imagination.
Are you excited for your new name?
