Who remembers this hymn? Trust and Obey, also known as When we walk with the Lord.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
Author: John H. Sammis (1887)
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
So simple and yet it tells us that if we trust the Lord, and walk in His ways, we will be happy in Jesus. He’ll carry the weight of our burdens.
How many of us, over the years, have turned from trusting in Christ and, instead, turned to worldly things for help? Maybe self-help books? Maybe anxiety eating? Or, the more common items of drugs and/or alcohol? I’m not saying that most of those things are not ok, in moderation, but if over used they become a crutch and often addictions.
Evil wants to make sure we are miserable. God wants to make sure we feel loved and secure.
[As for] God, His way [is] perfect; The word of the LORD [is] proven; He [is] a shield to all who trust in Him.
[2 Sa 22:31 NKJV]
By putting our full trust in the Lord and leaning not on our own understanding and worldly ways, God will always give us what we need to endure.
When we walk with the Lord in the light of his word, what a glory he sheds on our way! While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey. Chorus: Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, but our toil he doth richly repay; not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey. Dear Jesus:
In a time in our world when there is so much deceit and disinformation we know we can trust in you. Your Word is rock solid and always true. We are told to put our faith in you and to obey your Word. It isn’t easy to fully trust and obey, especially since the world, and our nation, are turning against you more and more. We know the way of truth is narrow. You told us that they persecuted you and we can expect the same. Lord Jesus, during these dark times, when everything is falling apart, help us remember that things are actually falling into place. Help us remember to put our full trust in you. Guide us and direct us as we focus on obeying you and not the world view. Help us make it to the finish line. Show us, show me, what to do so I can hear you say, “Well done good and faithful servant.” To you be the glory, Lord.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
[Pro 3:5 NKJV]
