The entirety of Your word [is] truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments [endures] forever.
[Psa 119:160 NKJV]
Truth. A word that would seemingly be so simple yet is so distorted in our world. Truth is no longer based on fact but rather opinion.
The current Webster’s dictionary defines truth under entry 1 as “the body of real things, events, and facts.” The synonym to truth is posted as actuality. “1: the quality or state of being actual, 2 : something that is actual : Fact.” (see similar post on Deceit)
Unfortunately, our world is increasingly throwing fact out and replacing it with their versions of truth. These “truths” are often defined by emotions rather than fact. With so much information at the tips of our fingers, literally, on phones, tablets, watches, computers, and other tech gadgets, we can search anything and have an answer within seconds. Then, it is up to the user to determine (research) if the information retrieved is truth or false.
As the world gets increasingly evil, the information given to the general public is becoming more and more confusing and deceptive. Truth is relative to what the giver of the information wants you to believe. Truth then becomes a narrative.
Each day as I turn to what I would think to be trusted sources I see deceit creeping in. Deceit meant to fit a “story” they want you to believe.
I am so thankful that God’s word is true. It is perfect. It is admirable. God tells us to focus on such things. During times of duress and crisis, He knew we would need to know where to turn and what to set our minds on.
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things [are] noble, whatever things [are] just, whatever things [are] pure, whatever things [are] lovely, whatever things [are] of good report, if [there is] any virtue and if [there is] anything praiseworthy–meditate on these things.
[Phl 4:8 NKJV]
So much of what we put into our heads each day falls outside of these parameters. It isn’t because we plan to let our heads get caught up in anything other than that which is of good repute, but evil has perfected the ability to distract us with “information” and headlines. The headlines themselves are often not an accurate representation of the content in the article.
A pastor I follow gave his congregation a tip on how to be discerning. He said, “I look at what’s happening in the world through the lens of scripture.” (JD Farag) The Holy Spirit is working within us. Let the Holy Spirit do his work in you, through you – let him guide you.
It is because of God’s truth, and knowing His word, and having it solid in our hearts that we can have wisdom and discernment.
Truth. Only found in God’s word. Thank you, Lord!
