Review: Tokyo Kawaii Club Disney Mystery Mailers

2018-09-27 By Heather

Tokyo Kawaii Club Mystery Mailers Review

Disney merchandise from other countries is a treat. It is even more special when you don’t know what you are going to get and the anticipation increases the excitement. That is what makes Disney Mystery Mailers such fun!

Owner

Tokyo Kawaii Club Mystery Mailers was started by Michael Donahoe as a way to support his desire to live in Japan and to enjoy his love of Disney. According to his website, he worked at a large social media company in the Bay Area and decided he needed a change. He calls the mailers, “Japan’s Cutest Monthly Mystery Subscription.”

Mystery Mailers

The mystery mailers arrive once a month and contain items from Tokyo Disneyland and Disney themed merchandise found throughout Japan. There are a variety of sizes and options for the mailers.

  • Magic Pin Mailer: 3 Mystery Disney Japan pins, including at least 2 Tokyo park exclusives.
  • Magic Mailer: 5+ Mystery Disney Japan items, including 1-2 Tokyo park exclusives.
  • Mini Magic Mailer: 3-4+ Smaller mystery Disney Japan items (ex: stationary, stickers, etc.). Does not include park items.
  • Gacha Mailer: 7-8 Mystery Japanese gachapon vending machine capsule toys.
  • Mini Gacha Mailer: 3-4 Mystery Japanese gachapon vending machine capsule toys.

The prices range from $24.99 to $49.99. They are shipped monthly or can be purchased as a one-time order.

Order

We heard about the Tokyo Kawaii Club through Mr. Cheezypop (a Disney v-logger). Of course, we had to look it up once we heard about it. After looking at some of the merchandise from past mailers, we decided to give the service a try.

Under Store on the website you can select which mailer you want to order. We selected the larger, Magic Mailer as it offers 5+ Mystery Disney Japan items, including 1-2 Tokyo park exclusives. Being the Disney fanatics that we are, we knew we wanted as many items as possible! Although there is a subscription option, we chose to go with the one-time purchase for our first order.

Once we place our order we received the order confirmation email.

It was shortly after we placed our order that we started receiving emails with more information about our first order.

Emails

Since the club is currently offering customization for certain mailers, there were a few emails sent back and forth so our first mailer would have items based on Disney characters we really like. The first email stated what information the club needed from us to get the ball rolling on our order.

After we sent the requested information, there were a few more emails. They were mostly to confirm that our preferences had been received, when we could expect shipment, and when the order shipped. These emails were more casual and definitely showed that Michael cares, as his customer service was fantastic.

After the email stream, it was time to wait for the package!

Package

It took about three weeks for our package to arrive. The website does state that it can take up to one month for the order to arrive, unless you choose a faster shipping method.

The items arrived in a mailer (mailing envelope) rather than a box. It is an unassuming mailer, but the logo for Tokyo Kawaii Club is on the envelope.

We could tell by the size that there was at least one sizable item in the mailer.

Contents

Inside the mailer was a plastic shopping bag from Tokyo Disneyland with the 35th Anniversary design.

Inside the bag was a variety of items. They were smaller so they would fit into the mailer. It was evident that items are chosen based on their ability to travel in a mailer and not get broken.

The largest item was a stuffed, Goofy Tsum Tsum. It is adorable and a perfect representation of Japan, since Tsum Tsums are a Japanese craze.

There was one food item in the mailer, something we would never see here in the US. The package had Winnie the Pooh Cookies & Honey. The cookies, much like a graham cracker, were to be dunked in a little container of honey. They were quite tasty!

The other Disney items were a Tokyo Disneyland map, Micky Mouse stickers, a Donald Duck journal, a Dumbo button, and cute little Winnie the Pooh purse mirror.

The finishing touch was a nice note from the sender thanking us for ordering from him.

In all, there was a nice assortment of merchandise.

Thoughts

We weren’t sure what to expect with the mystery mailer. However, the experience turned out to be very positive. The ordering process was simple. Michael’s communications were spot on with timeliness and right amount of information. The merchandise he chose adhered to the Disney characters we said we liked the most. Each item is cute and representative of Japan and Tokyo Disneyland. We would order from him again most definitely. Kudos to him for living his dream!
