10 Funny Things Dogs Do

2015-03-12 By Heather

Our two rescue mutts, Abra and Edan, are a laugh a day and more in our house! These are just some of the reasons our dogs are a stress relief and a barrel of laughs for us!

1. They have no sense of time.

No matter if you step out of the house for a few days on vacation or a few minutes to clean up their pen, our dogs are SO happy to have you home! They jump…they bark with glee…and they want to play!

2. They snore!

Yeah, we pretty much all snore as we get older. Dogs are no exception! Sometimes I think it is a snoring contest between my lab mutt, Chihuahua, and my husband! Ear plugs work wonders. LOL!

3. They sleep in the strangest positions.

I wake often with a kinked neck or back and wonder how in the world did sleeping make me so sore. Well, after watching our dogs sleep, I wonder a bit less. If they can get into strange positions I can only imagine the positions we humans can get into at night!

4. They act like true siblings.

I have seen plenty of siblings play and squabble. Our dogs are no different. They want what the other has, fight for the best position on the big bed, and wiggle their way for attention if the other is getting petted. Ever have your big dog try and sit in your lap because the smaller dog does all time? Yup, it’s like that all the time!

5. They can clear a room with one poof!!

The first few nights we had our lab mutt, she was about two months old, she slept in the crate in our bedroom. On the second night we were all snuggled in when “Holy Moly! What was that?!” Our little puppy had just made us jump and leave the room with one very silent poof that was worse than a skunk! Of course, she just looked at us with that “What? Something wrong? Why’d you leave the room?” look. Our dogs are not aware of what big smells their little bodies can produce. And, if we are lucky enough to get an actual sound for warning they look up and then back at their tail end and then at us as if they are saying, “Was that me?” And, as my parents like to say, dogs are biological. Um, yes, most definitely!

6. It’s all about the…squirrel!

Our dogs’ attention span is pretty short. They love to go outside and play fetch with the kong…for about a minute…then it is “Hey, what was that? What did I just smell? Ooooh, that plant looks good!” Yes, forever two year olds.

7. Vegetables? Not! Especially if it is broccoli.

Some dogs love vegetables. Ours, not so much. Carrots are ok but broccoli and cauliflower are pretty much out. Our lab, Abra, just can’t figure out broccoli. She literally (and I don’t know how with her big teeth) is able to chew out the stems and leave the little flowery tidbits behind! Watching her eat isn’t nearly as cute as her little brother, but with broccoli we are just intrigued!

8. They have us well trained.

If you think you have your dog under your command…think again. Do you rub their belly when they roll over four paws up? Do you pick them up when the tiny one stands on two hind feet and puts the others on your leg? Do you throw them a tidbit when you are cooking because they look up at you with this cute face and ears back? Yup, we are well trained owners for sure!

9. Snow bunnies…all depends on the dog!

When we first got our lab mutt we had an unusual snow fall in Oregon. All our friends with dogs kept telling us how much their dogs loved the snow. So, of course we had to take Abra out and play! Oh no! One step in and she was all “I wanna go back in mom!” There was no getting her to play. And her little brother, Edan, he just whined and whined…I assume because he was worried something would happen to Abra out there in that cold, white stuff.

Fast forward seven years and we get another huge snowfall. This time Abra begged to go outside! What? Huh? She couldn’t get enough of that cold, white stuff! The best part, she kept trying to catch snowballs but couldn’t understand why her “ball” was so cold!

10. They think they are so tough.

I know some dogs are bread to be guard dogs. Not ours! Our little Chihuahua will huff and puff, like the wolf in that pig story, but in reality he is just a puff ball. He’ll bark at the big doggies on the street, but when we walk by and he sees how big the other dog really is…he digs into me and goes “Uh oh, what was I thinking!” As for our lab mutt, she’ll bark…and then she runs behind daddy!  Yeah, they are our guard dogs for sure. They guard the back side of the sofa or the back side of our legs most of the time. 🙂
